Pokhara – city of lakes and caves

Pokhara, by its name, means a city of lakes and ponds, as there are numerous beautiful lakes where you can boat and literally drown your sorrows. And these lakes aren’t the only thing to blow your mind in Pokhara.

Pokhara is the second largest city of Nepal after Kathmandu. It is just at a distance of 200 kms from the capital city, and is easily accessible. There are numerous tourist buses, micro buses and local buses that take passengers in and out of Pokhara every day. Just five hours drive from Kathmandu, and you end up in a completely different place, with a completely different landscape and an entirely different feel from the buzzing hubbub of Kathmandu.

Pokhara is the home to numerous lakes and caves, a modern yet welcoming city life and not to mention, a plethora of peaks of the Himalayas. The lakes in Pokhara include Fewa Lake, Begnas Lake, Rupa Lake, Gude Lake, Neurani Lake and Maidi Lake among many others. The peaks than can be closely observed from Pokhara include Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I and Manaslu as these are within 30 miles from the city, and all of these peaks are more than 8,000 meters high. The city is also the gateway for trekking to the Annapurna Circuit. The notable caves here are Bat Cave, Mahendra Cave and Gupteshwor Cave among others.

There are two major notable hilltops in Pokhara that serve as a perfect getaway, the World Peace Pagoda at the southern shore of Fewa lake and Sarangkot, a beautiful hill at the north-west part of Pokhara. The newest attraction of Pokhara is Paragliding. Now you can paraglide from Sarangkot over the famous Fewa Lake and land at the bottom of the city. Other adventure sports in Pokhara include canyoning, base diving, kayaking, mountain biking and rock climbing.

One of the tourist attractions in Pokhara is Lake Side, a small part of the city famous for its ultra-modern restaurants and night clubs. Lake Side is the place to be if you want to experience the night life of Pokhara. There are numerous pubs, clubs and discos here to give you the taste of nightlife of Pokhara.

1.Adventure in Pokhara

As Pokhara is the adventurer’s haven in Nepal, it offers plenty of adventurous activities for you to try during your stay in the city.

a) Bungee Jumping in Pokhara

Pokhara introduced Bungee Jumping in the mid-September 2014. This is the second Bungee Jumping point in the country and is getting rapidly famous among the adventure lovers. Bungee jumpers fall from a height of 70 meters over an artificial pond. A boat then picks them up after the jump and helpers unharness them.

b) Paragliding in Pokhara

Pokhara is one of the best destinations in the world for paragliding. Enjoy the bird eye view of this wonderful city as you try out Paragliding in Pokhara. Enjoy the magnificent flight as you fly over the beautiful green hills and lakes while enjoying the incredible view of Annapurna range. The famous variant of the Paragliding is Para-hawking, where you get to fly alongside the magnificent birds. Paragliding is a popular activity to do in Pokhara.

c) Zip flyer in Pokhara

Zip flyer is the one of attractive adventure activities offered by the Adventurer’s Mecca, Pokhara. The Zip-flyer starts from the 1625 meters in Sarangkot and ends at 960mtrs in Hemmja plain. The Zip Flyer claims to be the most extreme zip flyer with the total distance of 1.80 km (1.12 mi), a vertical height of 610 m (2000 ft.) and a maximum speed of 120 km/hr (75 mph). The zip line is the world’s steepest, tallest and the fastest of its type in the world.

d) Ultra-light flight in Pokhara

It is a superb experience for light hearted adventurers. The Ultra-light Flight aircraft takes the flight over the beautiful hills and gives the full spectrum of the magnificent Pokhara valley along with mountain peaks and lakes. The light aircraft provides a passenger seat and no window allowing the riders to feel the fresh air and spectacular views of the lakes, mountains and villages.

e) Mountain Biking in Pokhara

Mountain biking is a fun opportunity to explore in and around the beautiful city of Pokhara. Take a ride through the lush green hills, remarkable villages along the river banks and around the temples as you explore the magnificent surrounding. The bikes can be easily rented on an hourly or daily basis from the various bicycle rental shops around the city.

f) Hiking near Pokhara

Pokhara is a starting point of most of the famous trekking routes in Nepal. These long treks may not be for everyone but, Pokhara also offers plenty of beautiful hikes that you can enjoy within a day. Take a short hike around the surrounding villages like Dhampus, Sarangkot hill or Kahun Daada. This is a perfect opportunity to enjoy a relaxing walking alongside the spectacular villages and splendid views.

  1. Lakeside Pokhara

Pokhara has many beautiful lakes. There are seven popular lakes in Pokhara namely; Dipang Lake, Begnas Lake, Rupa Lake, Maidi Lake, Khaste Lake, Gunde Lake and the most popular Phewa Lake. Apart from providing serene ambience and crystal clear water, these lakes are a major attraction among the visitors.

a) Fishing in Pokhara

Enjoy the fresh fishes in the near by shop or take your fishing rode along with you to catch your own fish. Some of these lakes offers a good spot for fishing and enjoying the serene ambience.

b) Boating in Pokhara

Boating in Pokhara can mostly be done in Phewa Lake. Row your boat and go around the beautiful Barahi Temple in the island in the middle of lake and enjoy the beautiful mountain vista reflecting on the clear lake water. Generally, a passenger can choose to boat himself or take a rower along with him.

c) Relax in Pokhara

Relax and enjoy the tranquil ambience as you read your favourite book or simply admire the beautiful surrounding. You can spend your days in a nearby café sipping your warm coffee and relishing the beautiful Pokhara.

  1. Landmarks in Pokhara

a) Devi’s fall

Devi’s fall, Davi’s Fall or the Patale Chango is a magnificent waterfall lying at 2 kms south-west of downtown Pokhara. The waterfall marks the point where the Pardi Khola stream vanishes underground. The sound of water plunging over the falls is deafening during the monsoon when the stream is at full bore.

b) World Peace Pagoda

The World Peace Pagoda is a beautiful Pagoda and can be seen on top of a hill on the southern fringe of Phewa Lake. The dome-shaped pagoda has four images of the Buddha facing the four directions. The pagoda has an impressive architecture and offers a spectacular views of the Annapurna range and nearby hills. You can reach the pagoda either with a wonderful hike in the hill or take a vehicle up to the hill top.

c) The Old Bazaar

The Old Bazaar is a stark contrast to Lakeside  Pokhara. The traditional bazaar is a colorful gathering place for an ethnically diverse group of traders. The architecture, temples and monuments in the bazaar bear a close resemblance to the Newari architecture of the Kathmandu Valley. Bindhyabasini Mandir, one of the most important temple in Pokhara lies in the old bazaar.

d) Caves in Pokhara

Pokhara is widely known for its mystical caves. These enigmatic caves of Pokhara conjure up a vision of a city hidden under the ground. You will be thrilled to visit the Mahendra Cave, Chameri Gupha, Gupteswar Mahadev Cave, The Crazy Cave, Balkailaseswor Cave and Siddheswor Cave. It is amazing to see different naturally shaped stones worshipped by the locals in the cave.

e) Museums in Pokhara

  1. Beautiful Mountains and Sunrise

How can we miss the most beautiful mountain range and its famous sunrise view in this wonderful city? Rise up early to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over the magnificent Annapurna panorama. The View of the Annapurna Range, Manaslu Range, Dhauragiri Range and the famous fishtail (Macchapuchhre) peak is splendid in the city. Go to the nearby hills like Sarangkot hill and relish the beautiful creation of nature.
